The One Percent Agency

One Percent Agency

After Monsoon Wedding and similar films, Indian weddings have become international affairs — attracting many tourists from the West. THE ONE PERCENT AGENCY is set in this new cosmopolitan India of wedding tourism, in the fascinating present of a vibrant country that is also shaped by its syncretic and at times conflictual past. A cutting satire on how the West consumes ‘exotic’ spectacles like ‘Indian Weddings’, it is also a loving comedy of attitudes — between Indians of different backgrounds. As a tourism agency struggles to provide its Western patrons with exactly the wedding that they have ordered, the complex realities of India intervene and create a love story of another sort altogether. A hilarious play not about the East meeting the West but about the East meeting the East!

‘The One Percent Agency’  is the first play by Tabish Khair, winner of the All India Poetry Prize, whose critically acclaimed fiction has been shortlisted for the Encore Award (UK), the Vodafone Crossword Prize, the Hindu Best Fiction Prize, the DSC Prize for South Asia (India), the Man Asian Literary Prize (Hong Kong) etc, and translated into several languages.

Dramatised reading organized by Yatrik, on March 10, at Open Air Amphitheater at India Habitat Centre, 7 p.m. Full scale production by Katyayani, and directed by Sohaila Kapur, in April-May 2012.
